April 24th, 2004
On April 24, 2004 the weather was terrific and the sun was shining on the first Miata Club trip of the new year to Mystic, CT. Six Miata’s formed up at Exit 26 off I-495 in Berlin, MA and headed off to CT. The morning was chilly but sunny so the tops came down! What should have been an uneventful, smooth sailing ride down I-395 en route to our first stop really was just that…right up to the point where we just pulled into the passing lane to pass an oversized pick up truck loaded with bales of hay when suddenly…one of the bales came lose and blew off the truck hitting the road like an exploding hay bomb! We all got by it OK but how about that for an early morning adrenalin rush! Our first stop at the Mobil rest area on I-395 in CT allowed us to hook up with three more Miatas and the caravan was growing. A few miles from the rest stop our Miata Caravan exited the highway and began a very scenic ride on route 49 through the CT countryside. It was farm country all the way so in addition to being a pretty ride it was also, in spots, very “odorous”. One more Miata joined us in Mystic and the members then began to enjoy the local attractions, Mystic Aquarium, the Seaport and Old Mystic Village. A lovely afternoon was had by all and at 5:30 we all met at Jamm’s Restaurant for a very nice dinner. After dinner it was off to Foxwoods Casinos and a chance to “Win Big”. While not everyone went off to Foxwoods the group of us that did had a good time. No one is talking about how much they won however, so my strategy is to look for the Brand New Miata at the next trip.
