About Us
The Montague Bookmill is a used bookstore housed in an 1842 gristmill, set on the banks of the Sawmill River, a few miles north of Amherst and Northampton, Massachusetts. Our collection leans toward the academic, but we have thousands of books, on just about everything from Austen and anarchy to Zola and zoology. Our books are generally half-price, including recent publisher’s overstocks. Don’t look for our catalogue on line; we’re not that bookstore. But if we can’t find the book you’re looking for, we’ll find you a better one you didn’t know you wanted.

After lunch we’ll head south to Granby Ma and a short stop at the “Notch “
Former Cold War command center inside the mountain
The former Cold War command center located inside the Holyoke Mountain Range (straddling the borders of Granby, Hadley, and South Hadley) is officially known as the Post-Attack Command and Control System (PACCS) Facility, and was widely nicknamed “The Bunker” or “The Notch”
The Mission: Constructed by the U.S. Air Force in 1957–1958, the 40,000-square-foot hardened bunker served as the alternate communications and combat operations center for the 8th Air Force and Strategic Air Command (SAC) at the nearby Westover Air Force Base
Survivability: The underground, two-story complex was carved deep into the rock of Bare Mountain to survive the overpressures of a nearby nuclear detonation.
Capabilities: Active through the Cuban Missile Crisis, it was designed to house up to 135 to 350 personnel for over a month and maintain command, control, and communication for U.S. nuclear forces if surface-level headquarters were destroyed.
Decommissioning: The site was rendered obsolete in the 1970s after Soviet reconnaissance and intelligence advances compromised its location
