For various reasons not the least of which was the near record breaking heat and humidity, the number of cars signed on to this trip dwindled precipitously as the departure date neared.
There were only four Miatas that exited the Wal Mart parking lot in Sturbridge on Saturday July 20.
The temperature was already in the upper eighties but the shaded back roads of Connecticut kept the heat at bay for most of the ride. Rolling hills, farmlands, private schools, lavish estates and a road with very little traffic made for a pleasant two hour drive to the seaport where everyone elected to enter the seaport museum. There we viewed the finishing touches being administered to the Mayflower II before it is moved out of its temporary shelter where it has undergone extensive restoration. Other sights included the Charles W. Morgan whaling ship, the “Streamlined” exhibit, the scale model of the Mystic seaport in the 1800s, a replica Viking ship and the many shops. One member of the group even took a Beetlecat boat out for a sail. The biggest surprise of the day was the huge yacht moored at the docks next to the C. W. Morgan with a Mini Cooper on its upper deck!
The group gathered later at The Engine Room for libations and a meal before heading home.
All in all, an enjoyable ride and a day well spent.
