PLOT SYNOPSIS

Upon turning 21, Frederic is released from his pirate apprenticeship to pursue a respectable life. Once ashore, he falls in love with Mabel, the daughter of Major General Stanley. When the pirates attempt to capture Mabel and her sisters to force them into marriage, the Major General tricks the crew into letting them go.

Frederic offers to help the local police arrest the pirates, but the Pirate King and Frederic’s former nursemaid, Ruth, reveal a loophole: Frederic was born on February 29 during a leap year, meaning he has technically only had five birthdays and must serve out the rest of his contract. Bound by his strict sense of duty, Frederic rejoins the pirates and reveals the Major General’s trickery.

Seeking revenge, the pirates storm Major General Stanley’s estate and overpower the police. However, when the police sergeant demands their surrender in the name of Queen Victoria, the loyal pirates immediately yield. Ruth then reveals that the pirates are actually noblemen gone astray. Hearing this, the Major General forgives them and happily grants permission for the pirates to marry his daughters.
