SUMMARY:September 13\, 2025 Steak and Castle
DESCRIPTION:Steak and Castle \nSeptember 13\, 2025 \nPlease join us for a scenic afternoon drive to a highly regarded steak house and a sunset walk to the ruins of a local “castle” in Groton Massachusetts. \nWe will meet at the Lowes in Hudson at 2:45 P.M. for a 3:00 P.M. departure. \nUPDATE:\nDue to difficulty getting tables at the Gibbet Hill Grill\, we had to change the dinner destination. The new destination is Forge & Vine\, which is about ¼ mile from Gibbet Hill. Forge & Vine features a wood-fired open kitchen\, and serves a variety of dishes\, including steak\, poultry\, lamb\, pork\, and seafood. Please budget $40.00-80.00 per person\, excluding drinks. The atmosphere is lively\, and the dress is smart casual.\n \nThose who are interested may join us for a short drive from the restaurant to Bancroft’s Castle.  Bancroft’s Castle was built by General William Bancroft as his personal home in 1906. When he ran out of money\, he sold the property\, and it eventually passed into the hands of the Groton Hunt Club\, which used the Castle for hunting parties\, dances\, dinners and outings. In 1932 a fire started by careless trespassers with fireworks destroyed most of the home leaving only the ruins of the observation tower intact. We should arrive at the Castle around sunset for some nice views of the surrounding countryside. The sunset walk / hike up to see Bancroft Castle will continue as before. \nDate: Saturday September 13 2025\nTime: Marshal 2:45 P.M. for 3:00 P.M. departure \nStart: Lowes\, Hudson MA\nDestination: Gibbet Hill Grill \nDinner: 5:00 P.M.\nCost: $40.00-80.00 per person without drinks \nItinerary: Google / TomTom / GPX (48 miles / 108 minutes) \nOptional hike:\nHike start: ~6:30 P.M.\nSunset: 6:56 P.M.\nItinerary: GPX (0.6 miles / 15 minutes each way)\nFinish Time: ~7:00 P.M. \n8 car limit. \nTo sign up\, please fill out this brief form.
