DESCRIPTION:It is recommended that all FFNE 2 volunteers attend the picnic to receive your volunteer’s shirt and a quick meeting. Meeting at 11:00 A.M.\nColt state park has beautiful ocean views and there is always a nice sea breeze.  \nAnnual Membership Appreciation Day & Club Picnic will be held at Colt State Park\, Route 114\, 1070 hope Street Bristol\, Rhode Island. picnic and swimming too. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAll Mass Miata members and their families are invited to this annual event\, which was started to show the Club’s appreciation to all our members and to thank everyone for their participation & support. \nWe have shelter 1. We had shelter 2 last year\, but it is booked for a wedding. There is parking near by and restrooms close to shelter 1. Follow the Mass Miata signs. \nIce cream and swimming at the Trout’s after the picnic. Pack your suit and towels. \nAppetizers will be served beginning at 10:30 AM with lunch being served around noontime. \nThe club will be providing the entrees (Hamburger’s and Hot Dogs and rolls).  There is no cost to members to attend this event\, however in an effort to control costs\, the club is asking members to provide appetizers\, salads\, desserts\, condiments\, etc. Please consider contributing one of the following items and letting Brenda Gauvin    activities@massmiata.net  know what you would like to bring. DESCRIPTION:Northfield Drive-In Trip \n \n  \nJoin us for a trip through the backwoods of northern Massachusetts to the historic Northfield Drive-In. The Northfield is celebrating 70 years of showing movies under the stars\, and is listed as one of the 30 best drive-ins in the country. Saturday August 10th is a Retro night – with two classic films showing as a double features being  (Back to the future and the Goonies). \n  \nWe will meet at the Regency Westford at 2:30pm\, for the 70 mile / 2 hour trip to the Northfield Drive-In. We will be going on back roads for the whole trip – there is one brief section (less than a mile) on an unpaved road that will take in 2nd gear. We’ll stop about halfway through the trip for ice cream. The gates at the Northfield will open at 6:30pm. There is a snack bar in the drive-in serving burgers/hot dogs/pizza (and popcorn\, of course)\, or you can bring your own picnic dinner. Folding chairs or a picnic blanket might be a good idea; bug spray is essential! Tickets are $24/car – cash only\, paid at the gate. The movie screening should start about ½ hour after sunset\, or 8:30PM. After the movie(s)\, you can plan a late night return or stay overnight at one of the nearby inexpensive motels. \n  \nThis trip is limited to 12 cars. RSVP by August 7. Morgan whaling ship\, ride a steam boat up the Mystic River\, view the restoration of the Mayflower II\, see an amazing scale model of the seaport as it was in the days of whaling as well as the art gallery and artisan shops of the village.　 In the town of Mystic there is the Jeffrey P’an Glass Works of blown glass creations plus many fine craft\, art and antique shops.　 You can enjoy a cruise on the schooner Argia Mystic or dine in one of the many restaurants (The Engine Room is recommended).　 There’s so much to see and do you may even decide to stay the night. \nWe will be gathering at 8:00 AM in the southeast corner or left front of the Walmart parking lot (as you face the store) at 100 Charlton Rd (Rt. 20) Sturbridge\, MA.　 (Take the Rt. 84 exit off the Mass Pike and follow the signs to Rt. 20 east.　 Walmart is shortly on the left.)　 Drivers meet at 8:15 AM for route directions to Mystic as well as directions for an alternate\, shorter\, faster return route. After lunch we will continue over back roads where we will cross over 6 more covered bridges ending at our last pit stop. We will then board a ferry boat for a short trip across the Connecticut River. Then a short drive to the Essex Steam train for a two and half hour combined train and scenic boat trip. Afterwards dinner for those interested. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nGillette Castle State Park straddles the towns of East Haddam and Lyme\, Connecticut in the United States\, sitting high above the Connecticut River. The castle was originally a private residence commissioned and designed by William Gillette\, an American actor who is most famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes on stage. Gillette lived at this estate from 1919–1937.[2] The estate was purchased by the state of Connecticut in 1943 for a price of $5\,000. \n  \nAbout the Train \nEssex Steam Train & Riverboat’s 2 1/2-hour journey begins at the historic 1892 Essex Station for a 12-mile\, narrated round-trip into the heart of the unspoiled Connecticut River Valley. The steam locomotive pulls vintage coaches through the quintessential New England towns of Deep River and Chester. A natural highlight is the undeveloped Selden Neck State Park\, accessible only by boat. Essex Steam Train offers unique access to several coves and preserves\, immersing passengers in an on-board eco-excursion. The train travels near the tidal wetlands of Pratt Cove and Chester Creek — bountiful\, natural habitats for birds including Cormorants\, Ducks\, Swans\, Greenland Geese\, Blue Heron\, Egrets\, and Red-winged Blackbirds. DESCRIPTION:Brewery Run IV \nMay 25\, 2019 \nWe will be meeting at Kimball’s Parking Lot on Rte 70 in Lancaster. Our Drivers meeting at 10:30. \nThere will be an hour ride to our picnic area. After lunch we will drive one mile to Wachusett Brewing Co. Food is available at Wachusett Brewery if  you do not wish to bring a picnic.  The flights here range from $10 – $12 for four 5 oz. beers.  The price varies depending on the beers you choose; they range from $2 to $2.50 a sample. \nAfter our sampling is complete\, we will continue our drive for another 1 ½ hour to Tree House Brewing Company\, in Charlton\, MA. This will be a very busy place with long lines on a Saturday.  There are no flights at the Tree House Brewery. Tickets are purchased for $8.56 each and are redeemed for one 16 oz. pour or two 8 oz. pours at the pour station. This will make it easy to share with someone if 16oz. is more than you want.  This brewery is located on a hill with chairs available and entertainment at times.  There are also Food Trucks providing an assortment of snacks and meals.  Feel free to bring a blanket to sit on in case the chairs are all taken and you wish to stay for a while. \nMy plans are to relax and enjoy this venue. Southwick’s Zoo\, located in Mendon\, MA\, is a family operated zoo in operation since 1963. With 300 acres of tree covered land and over 100 species\, you’re sure to find some animals you like such as lion\, tiger\, leopard\, cheetah\, chimpanzee\, giraffe\, zebra\, and the rare white rhinoceros.  You can also attend animal presentations\, bird shows and animal feedings. \nAdmission is $28 per adult\, $24 per child (3-12)\, and $22 per senior (62+). Depending on the number of people attending\, we may qualify for a group rate as low as $15 per person.  Parking is free. \nThe zoo offers several places for lunch including The Zebra Café\, The Deli\, The Funky Monkey and several other quick service counters. If you prefer a more traditional lunch\, there’s also Galliford’s Restaurant & Tavern at the zoo’s entrance. Picnic areas are available if you wish to bring your own lunch. \nFor anyone looking for some extra excitement\, there’s the Soaring Eagle Zipline (extra charge). And for the less adventurous there’s the Skyfari Sky Ride or the Woodland Express Train Ride (extra charge). \nThe day will start with an at 8:45 drivers meeting at the McDonalds located off Route 146\, Exit 1 at 200 Quaker Hwy\, Uxbridge\, MA. Departure will be at 9 am. We’ll drive some interesting and challenging roads and arrive at the zoo around 10 am. We plan to leave around 3 pm for a final drive to an ice cream stop at the Ice Cream Machine in Cumberland\, RI. Here’s an event that\, while admittedly a bit self serving\, should be fun\, and a great way to connect with all your Miata Club friends.  I’m playing cello in the pit orchestra of the Sudbury Savoyard’s production of the Gilbert and Sullivan show Yeoman of the Guard.  “Set in the Tower of London in the days of Henry VIII\, the show has elements of comedy\, tragedy\, intimacy and pageantry. Gilbert’s plot combines a myriad of twists and turns with a host of believable and sympathetic characters; Sullivan contributed one of his grandest scores.” To get an advance flavor of the music\, check out recordings on Youtube from the famous D’Oyly Carte Opera Company:  Act One\, Act Two . \nI’d like to invite club members to join Paul and me at noon on Sun.\, Feb. 24 for the jazz brunch at Bullfinch’s Restaurant\, 730 Boston Post Road in Sudbury.  The performers are the Cindy Lou trio.  Following brunch we’ll drive about five miles to Lincoln-Sudbury High School\, where the 2:00 p.m. show will be held.  Tickets are $25/$22 seniors and can be purchased on line. \nIf you’d like to come\, please book your tickets individually and then e-mail me\, Celia Raia\, at c_raia@yahoo.com\, by Feb. 14 so I can get a head count for brunch. \nWe hope to see you there!

DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, the pre-hibernation run will be the same as last year. \nWe are all fortunate enough to have one or more of our fun little cars and I don’t know about you\, but every time I am able to go on a ride with the top down it brings a big smile to my face. Let’s put that same smile on the face of a needy child with a new toy. Bring one or more new and unwrapped toy which will be donated to the toy for tots program. \nI spoke with Roger at Wrights Farm and all the toys he collected from his staff plus the toys we brought last year added up to over 300 toys. Imagine all the kids smiling faces. I can. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nCome join us on our last scheduled ride of the year before the gloomy days of winter arrive. Being the last ride of the season it tends to be very popular and we usually split into two groups or maybe even three this year. Last year I had 69 people and 39 cars. This year we could easily need to split into four groups. \nAs usual imaginative head wear is encouraged. \n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \nWe will meet at 8:30 AM at the Home Depot Sutton Ave. Oxford\, MA. Drivers meet at 8:45 AM with the first group departing at 9:00 AM. Time may change depending on how many cars we have. \nThis will be a ride over twisty back roads of Southern Central Mass and Northern Rhode Island. Our trip will take us through the towns of Sutton\, Whitinsville\, Douglas\, Connecticut and into Rhode Island for our lunch at Wright’s Chicken Farm for an all you can eat family style chicken dinner\, fresh baked rolls\, salad\, pasta with sauce\, home style French fries\, coffee\, tea and soda for $21.50 per person including tax and tip. Beautiful scenery for A leisurely cruise as long as the sea smoke does not roll in like last year. \nWe will dine at Newick’s Lobster House at Dover Point at the entrance to Great Bay. Always great food and easy parking. \n \n  \n  \nwww.newicks.com \n  \nAfter dinner we will continue our cruise around Great Bay in the dark on some very twisty local roads. This will create many challenges to keep the group from getting lost in the darkness even though there should be a full moon. DESCRIPTION:MYSTERY TRIP \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMEET: Ted’s Package Store 47 Worcester Road (Route 20)\, Charlton\, MA 01508 \nMEETING TIME: 10:00 AM \nA GPS or other navigational device that can be set to non-highway is very helpful. If you are using a phone application\, you must have a navigator. This can also be driven with a good set of maps. \nThe first cars will leave Ted’s at 10:15 AM with the other groups leaving at 10 minute intervals. \nCars will be traveling in small groups of 3 or 4 cars. You will be given turn by turn directions with a number of questions to be answered. All the answers are visible from your car. Groups can work together on the answers. This  allows people without a passenger to participate safely. \nEach group will select a leader. Leaders can be changed at each stop or at other intervals as determined by the group. \nEach section of the ride (start to lunch and lunch to ice cream) should be less than 2 hours so no pit stops have been designated. Pit stops may be taken if needed and at a good location found. \nWe will be having lunch at Ronnie’s Seafood in Charlton\, MA. Groups will eat as they arrive and leave when their entire group is done. Do not wait for everyone to arrive. With basic knowledge and guidance from seasoned members\, you too can plan a trip. \nMy first encounter with running trips was being a tail car on a planned trip for the Fall For New England event held in 2012. I liked feeling involved so much that I had to figure out how to plan a trip.
