(April 9-September 12\, 2021) \nSonya Clark: Monumental Cloth\, The Flag We Should Know\, In the spring of 1865\, a seemingly unremarkable dishcloth played a crucial role in ending the Civil War as the South’s flag of surrender at Appomattox. In this exhibition\, textile and social practice artist Sonya Clark focuses specifically on this Confederate Flag of Truce\, exploring the legacy of symbols and challenging the power of propaganda\, erasures\, and omissions. \nSonya Clark: Heavenly Bound\, Clark’s most recent work responds to the perilous northward journey of formerly enslaved people on the Underground Railroad\, centering on African American experiences of survival and emancipation. This body of recent work will be accompanied by selections from deCordova’s permanent collection\, addressing national symbols\, race\, and collective memory. \nWhat We Do in the Shadows\, Highlighting deCordova’s holdings of art associated with postwar countercultures in the United States\, this exhibition looks across the Museum’s legacy of collecting works that push against the status quo\, uplift disempowered people\, and disseminate messages of peace and equality. \nFor more information visit https://thetrustees.org/place/decordova/ \n  \nI will have maps\, gpx tracks\, details for any admission payment or cafe order\, and other details later. \nRichard and Jeanne Canale \n29 Shade Street\, Lexington \n781 861-0287 \nrichard_jeanne@icloud.com
