HOTEL BOOKING DEADLINE IS 5/20/2018

We did this trip a few years ago, and have had request to do it again. So off we go to New York City, and a fantastic car show in Greenwich. Not a lot of typical driving roads, but good times with good people.

On Friday our lunch stop will be on the grounds of Gillette Castle along the banks of the Connecticut River. Plan on packing a picnic lunch, or grab a quick lunch at the concession stand. Tours of the castle are available. After lunch we will board the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry to cross the river. This is a small ferry so we may not all be able to cross at the same time.  There is a $5.00 per vehicle charge.

Friday and Saturday night we will be staying at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Stamford CT. A total of 15 rooms have been blocked. Providing we get at least ten rooms reserved the group rate will be $125.00 a night plus a 15% tax ($143.75). This rate includes free parking, wifi, and breakfast. Friday night you will be on your own for dinner, but there is an Italian Restaurant in the hotel. To make your reservations call directly at (203) 353-9855 and make sure to tell them you are with the Mass Miata Club to get the group rate. The block of rooms are being held till 5/20/2018. Any reservations maybe cancelled up to 48 hours prior to the arrival date.

Hotel  Reservation

SATURDAY

The hotel is located just a short 5 t0 10 minute drive to the Stamford train station. You can either drive, taxi, or Uber to the station. We will be taking a train into Grand Central Station in NYC to enjoy the city for the day. Train fare is $11.50 for adults and $7.50 for us seniors. Once we are in the city it is up to you to decide how you would like to spend the day.

There are many options, here are just a few:

Guided Double Decker Bus tours. If you have never spent much time in New York this is a good option. You can hop on and off the bus at different locations. There are a few operations and most can be picked up in Time Square.

See a Broadway Show. Discount tickets are available at the TKTS booth in Times Square. Matinee tickets go on sale at 10:00 Am and the best shows sell out quickly. You never know what shows are available on any given day.

Visit a museum. Many to see including the NY Natural History Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, The Guggenheim, and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

Statue of Liberty. This is what I was hoping to do  but regular tickets are sold out till late August. But there are private guided tour operations that offers trips to the State and Ellis Island. More expensive of course but might be worth the extra cost. One I was looking at was a Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and 9/11 Memorial tour. Cost $110.00 with a meeting time of 8:30, so an early start. Details at www.takewalks.com

Downton Abbey-for fans of the show, like me, there is what looks like  an interesting exhibit. Includes recreations of the rooms of the Abbey, costumes, and more. For further information : www.downtonexhibition.com

Top of the Rock-The views from the observation deck at the top of Rockefeller Tower are amazing. Well worth the price especially at sunset. The above picture I took from the Top of the Rock the last time we did this trip. I suggest we all meet at Rockefeller Center around 6:00 PM to enjoy the views together. Tickets can be purchases in advance at http://www.topoftherocknyc.com Afterwards walk through Times Square to enjoy the lights before returning to the Grand Central Station.

SUNDAY

Just a short ten minutes drive from the hotel is Greenwich Concourse De Elegance which is located on the beautiful Roger Sherman Baldwin Park. This is one of the premier Concourse in the nation and the largest in the Northeast. Many rare and beautifully restored cars, with a special display of jaguars. Just don’t expect to see any Miata’s except in the parking lot. For those of you that want to spend your children’s inheritance there is a Bonhams auction which this year features  the personal collection of Carroll Shelby. Also surrounding the show field will be displays of new cars fro m the likes of Ferrari, Buggatti, and Aston Martin. There will also be some yachts on display next to the show field. Ticket price for the show is $30.00 in advance and $40.00 at the gate. Note this is a rain or shine event, so no refunds if you buy your tickets in advance. www.greenwichconcours.com

Once you have made your reservations with the hotel let me know so that I may have a list of all attending. Also include your thoughts about what you plan on doing in the city.  Les Barton cbmiata@Verizon.net
